How's the RE in your local school?
Last week, Politician Stephen Morgan, the Shadow Education Minister, in a speech at Westminster Hall, called for more support for Religious Education and urged the Government to do more to protect the subject. He is appalled by the Government's failure to introduce a National Plan for RE.
As Groundbreakers visit many primary schools across Manchester, taking assemblies and RE lessons, they certainly find that, in general, there is a lack of knowledge about the Christian faith and that they cannot take anything for granted with even the Christmas and Easter stories being confused.
Just recently, when they asked a class of KS2 children to give them the key facts of the Christmas story, some children said they could not remember the story, some could remember a few points and there was a lot of confusion with one child saying, "Well I know there were three shepherds who brought gifts of copper, gold, and iron.!"
RE needs protecting and Groundbreakers is working hard to do just that.
If your church would like to talk to Groundbreakers about how, in partnership, you can support your local primary school, contact Mary by email at Groundbreakers@ManchesterCityMission.org.uk
