Celebrating Together..
With 7:9
After a month of fasting (Ramadan is believed to be the time that their holy book was given to their prophet), Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr (Festival of breaking the fast).
At our English class, we enjoyed time off from our lessons and shared a wonderful array of food which the Bangladeshi Muslim ladies had brought for our Eid & Easter party. Sarah’s plate was overflowing due to the generosity of the class.
One of the church members had brought a simnel cake which gave Sarah an opportunity to tell part of the Easter story. ‘One of Jesus’ close friends, Judas, betrayed him, just as Jesus knew he would. Jesus came to earth from heaven to die on the cross, to take the punishment for everyone’s sin - yours and mine. We can choose to follow him, or not, like Judas.’
We then went into the main church building and the story continued. ‘Jesus died on the cross and was buried in a tomb. On the third day, Mary and some ladies went to put spices on the body. But it was gone! I love that God chose women to be the first to know that Jesus is alive.’
(Some ladies' faces lit up at this news).
‘At Easter, we give eggs as a sign of the new life we have been given by Jesus. Somewhere in this room is an egg for you to enjoy. Happy Easter!’
