Do You Always need An Invitation?

A Window Into The Kind of Work 7:9 Does!

I, like most people, have experienced periods of great sadness and loss. At times like this, I usually just want to stay in bed, curl up in the duvet and be on my own. For a long time, I never really questioned it. Perhaps that is what you would do too?

What was Jesus teaching us through his response to the news of Lazarus’ death? (John 11:6) Did he stay where he was for two more days to give us some sort of blueprint? I don’t think so!

People in Muslim countries often bury their loved ones the day after they have died. The community will gather and visit the family as soon as they can. Many Muslims in the UK will appreciate it if neighbours come to share time with them; in hospital when they are ill, when there is a bereavement, and also during times of joy such as the birth of a baby, or a wedding. It’s not just for ‘immediate family’!

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend time with some Muslim people when they were going through personal issues. As I was talking with one lady, I was reminded of the story of Mary and Martha, so I shared it. I said that the culture in the time of Jesus was very hospitable, like it is in Islam today. I said that Jesus’ friend, Martha, was doing a good job hosting those who were visiting with Jesus. As He was talking, teaching the people, Mary, her sister, sat and listened to Him. Martha was upset by this but Jesus wasn’t, He said ‘Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her’ (Luke 10:42). I believe that God was encouraging the lady who I was with, that she can listen to God too; that he is pleased for her to take time away from running the house so that she can do this.

A few days later, I received a message in response to my visit. It was hugely touching. It said ‘You are light in darkness’. I knew that the Holy Spirit was working in this. What a joy to read these words which echoed those of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount ‘You are the light of the world’ (Matt 5:14).

So please, don’t wait for an invitation, or for closer friends to visit first. Go and visit your Muslim neighbour today! Pray, take a small gift (dates, fruit, anything!), and offer comfort and hope whatever the season. God’s timing is perfect!
